One of my favorite Stargate SG-1 episodes is Wormhole X-treme, about an alien who is trying to make a TV series based on the Stargate program. It's a wicked self-parody. One of my favorite lines is Peter Deluise, one of Stargate's directors, telling his special effects guys why he was displeased the explosions they were demonstrating: "Read my lips. Big-ger!!"
Kinda summed up Hollywood science fiction movies in five syllables.

The answer is almost always "No." But at least they give us eye candy to properly distract us. Or something. Quick, add another explosion!
