I Don't Like Ice

I don't know much about electric power utilities, but I do know that they hate ice storms. Ice storms break power lines that have weakened, and they break trees that are near power lines. What ends up happening is lots of little bits of damage that add up to no power.

All of which is a way of saying that I haven't been anywhere on the Internet the last few days.

Happily, there are some good pictures.

Enjoy your weekend.

Nice pictures, glad I'm not there.
My eyes ain't so good anymore, you live right next to the water?
Thankfully we missed most of that nasty stuff down here in the SW of the state.
You got hammered with it and so did those on the east side of The Gorge.

Yikes! That's quite a bit of snow and ice! We've had almost nothing of the sort here. All I see outside my window are brown grasses.

Hi Busted,

I live a mile or two from the Puget Sound, depending which direction we're talking about. The southern Puget Sound region got the worst of the ice storms, which I think is just due to chance. We were just the right spot for snow that turns to ice plus lots of freezing rain. Other areas got more snow, and less ice.

Yes, Paul, this is more ice than I ever want to see again in anything other than a picture.

Get freezing rains here often. A couple of years ago we got a ventless gas fire place. So we don't need electricity and absent a major earth quake we should have heat. If worse comes to worse we can cypher in front of the fire or read them old time thingys made with paper.

Well I hope you are warm and all is well now. Nice pics incidentally.

I'm starting to think that any form of heat that doesn't require electricity is probably a great idea, lawguy. Unfortunately, most do, and many also require that you have fuel.

Our last BAD storm was (I think) early 2004, with about 3/4 of an inch. 1/5 of OSU's trees were fatally damaged, and 3/4 of the reminder needed attention. It was a nightmare. But the thing is, for me personally, *any* ice, even just a half a millimeter, makes walking hell. If I fall, I'm going to break.

This was the worst ever for me, combining lots of ice and snow and, of course, lost power. Still, even small amounts of ice can make walking and driving hazardous. I should probably invest in a pair of spikes or something ...
